13976: NY - Form Printing not Allowed

New York requires that available updates are installed before NY forms can be printed. NY form printing is disabled if software updates are available, but not installed. New York preparers will experience interruption when trying to print NY forms whenever a state update is posted and becomes available online. 

The New York Department of Taxation and Finance has required software developers to ensure that certain of its forms cannot be printed unless the most recent software updates have been installed.

Accordingly, printing from the Drake NY package is disabled whenever Drake posts any software update online. Installing all available updates enables printing. Drake Tax cannot determine to what software package an update applies until it is downloaded. The consequence is that NY form printing is disabled whenever Drake posts any software update, regardless of whether it is a NY update.

Most Drake updates are posted at 2 AM and are available at the start of business in the morning. If updates are available when you log in to Drake Tax, you will receive a notification window - only once per day - informing you  that updates are available and providing an option to update before beginning your return preparation for the day. If the updates are not installed at this point, the software will provide a daily reminder until successfully updated. 

The Drake Tax "Home Screen"  also provides an indication of your Update Status. When updates are available, a button is provided to easily download and install them.

However, some important updates occasionally have to be released during the day. Drake is aware that this interferes with NY form printing. We limit update posting to 2 AM unless there are overriding reasons to vary from that schedule.

You can further limit printing interruptions by uninstalling any state software that you have not used and are unlikely to use. The posting of updates for states you have not installed does not disable NY form printing. The best practice is not to install state software until it is needed, or remove it if it is not needed any longer (see Related Links, below) - state programs do not take long to add or remove..
