10209: Taxpayer's Phone Number

Banking Generally

When are phone numbers required?

The taxpayer's daytime phone number is required when filing for bank products. A valid phone number must be 10 digits. The phone number on screen 1 must match the phone number on the bank screen (if applicable).

Starting in tax year 2019, the IRS has added a phone number line to Form 1040 in the signature section. This entry is optional at this time. If you do not want to print the taxpayer's phone number on the forms globally, go to Setup > Options > Optional Items on Return > and uncheck Taxpayer Phone Number. This will allow you to keep the phone numbers in data entry for your use, but does not print it on Forms 1040 or 1040-SR. In data entry of a return, you can choose NONE in the Print on Return drop list on screen 1 for taxpayer and or spouse.

On the MISC screen, you can enter a Foreign telephone number for the Taxpayer. This phone number replaces the evening phone number if entered on screen 1. It appears on the client's bill and the Summary. It is not printed on Form 1040 or valid for bank products.
