10586: Checks Omit Payee Name Suffix

Checks

Any bank refund check issued to a taxpayer whose name includes a suffix does not display the suffix.

Sometimes bank product checks do not include a name suffix on the payee line. "John Smith Jr." or "John Smith III" would appear as "John Smith".

In the event the taxpayer cannot cash a check because the suffix is omitted

  1. Have the taxpayer return the check to you.
  2. Void the check and handle it in accordance with your bank's instructions for voided checks.
  3. Ask your bank to reissue the check with the correct taxpayer name that includes the suffix. See the instructions for your specific bank in "Wrong Name on Check" (Related Links below).
  4. Advise affected taxpayers that it will be 3 to 5 days after the request is submitted for the check to reach them.
