10645: 1127 - Request For Extension of Time to Pay

1040 Individual

How would a taxpayer ask for an extension of time to pay?

Form 4868 is only an extension of time to file a return, it does not grant an extension of time to pay any amount due. If the taxpayer would like to request an extension of time to pay the tax due, they may do so with Form 1127. The form is not in the software, but the fillable form is available at IRS.gov.

If approved, the IRS grants a six-month extension of time to pay tax due on a return. Generally, the taxpayer must show that payment on the due date would cause undue financial hardship. If the extension is granted, the taxpayer is relieved of penalties if full payment is made by the extension date, but remains responsible for interest on the amount due.

If the taxpayer only needs to file an extension of time to file their return, see Related Links below for details on generating and e-filing a Form 4868.
