10766: Age Limitations for Bank Products

Banking Generally

Are there any age limitations to apply for (receive) a bank product?

All banks currently have the same age requirement. The taxpayer (and secondary taxpayer, or spouse, if married filing jointly) must be at least 18 years of age to apply for any bank product.

Red message 5117 may generate if the taxpayer (or spouse, if MFJ) is not over 18 years of age. If one or both taxpayers on the return are over 18 years of age, but one of these error messages generates, check:

  • the birth date (or dates, if MFJ) on Screen 1 for accuracy.
  • the computer system date, since that date is used by the software to calculate the taxpayer's age. If the date is wrong, reset the system date to the present date. (If the reset system data will not hold, it may mean that the battery in the computer that maintains the system settings, such as date and time, when the computer is off or unplugged needs replacement.)
