10924: KS - E-filing the Homestead Claim (K-40H)

Kansas

Can I e-file the Kansas Homestead Claim (K-40H)?

Yes, however, Form K-40H (Kansas Homestead Claim) cannot be transmitted by itself. It is automatically transmitted with Form K-40 (Kansas Individual Income Tax), which must be e-filed either with the federal return, or after the federal return is e-filed and accepted.

If there are any federal EF messages that prevent federal e-filing, you cannot e-file Form K-40/K-40H for that taxpayer. An example is someone who is not reporting any income (federal EF Message 0192).

An EF screen selection to transmit a stand-alone KS return generates KS EF Message 0098 to prevent e-filing:

KS electronic filing is not allowed.
KS returns can only be transmitted once one of the following
conditions has been met.

1) The Federal return has been accepted.
2) The KS return is being transmitted with the federal return.

If the Federal return has not already been filed and accepted, clear
all of the Federal message pages.

If the Federal message pages are cleared, clear any Kansas message
pages that exist within the return.
