11935: X or APX Indicates Republic or EPS Checks that No Longer Can be Printed

Banking

What does an “X” or “APX” mean in the Ck Clear column for a client in EF > Search EF Database?

An X or APX in the Ck Clear column (EF > Search EF Database, General Information tab) means a check print deadline has passed, and you cannot print the check without first getting the issuing bank to reauthorize it. Both Republic Bank and EPS impose a check print deadline.

After you are authorized to print a check:

  • Republic allows ten days to print it.
  • EPS allows seven days to print it.

This period begins when the check is authorized, regardless of when you actually retrieved the authorizing acknowledgment. On the check print deadline, an initial “check clear” record is sent to your EF database. If you have not already printed the check, this initial check clear record stops you from printing it until the bank reissues a check acknowledgement and you download and process it.

The reissue is not automatic; you must request it from the specific bank. The best way to avoid this problem is to retrieve acks often (at least once a day) and print the checks soon after you receive the authorization.
