12040: DC - Extension for Filing Business Franchise Tax

District of Columbia

How do I file an extension for a DC Franchise Tax return?

  • FR-120: Extension of Time to File a DC Corporation Franchise Tax Return (D-20)
  • FR-130: Extension of Time to File a DC Unincorporated Business Franchise Return (D-30)
    • Note: This form can only be e-filed when generated in a partnership return. If generated in another return type, it must be paper-filed at this time
  • FR-165: Extension of Time to File a DC Partnership Return (D-65)

These extension forms can be generated from within Data Entry of each entity's return; on the States tab, open the DC return, then complete the EXT screen.

These extension forms can be e-filed (with the above exception). On the federal EF Selections screen, select the DC EXT (or DC FXT in the partnership package) as the state form to be e-filed. Review the return in View mode, and clear any red messages about the extension form before attempting to e-file.

For more information about these form changes, and instructions for these forms, see the DC Office of Tax and Revenue website.

Beginning in the 2016 filing season, form FR-128 was retired, and replaced with the forms listed above.
