14351: 1040 - Verification Code on Form W-2

1040 Individual Data Entry

What is the verification code that is present on copies B and C of the W-2?

For tax years 2018 and prior, the IRS was testing a W-2 Verification Code with certain Payroll Service Providers (PSPs). Per the IRS, "Because of new wage and income reporting requirements, the IRS announced it would discontinue the Form W-2 Verification Code pilot for the 2019 tax year."

The Verification Code may be presented in Mixed case. The IRS did not specify if the codes were case sensitive. "...omitted and incorrect verification codes will not delay processing..."

In Drake17 and Drake18, entry for the W-2 Verification Code is line 9 on screen W2 on the General tab in data entry of the individual return. The code will consist of four groups of alphanumeric characters, separated by hyphens. There is no need to enter the hyphens in data entry when entering the verification code.

In Drake16, entry for the W-2 Verification Code is located at the bottom of screen W2 on the General tab in data entry of the individual return. The code will consist of four groups of alphanumeric characters, separated by hyphens. There is no need to enter the hyphens in data entry when entering the verification code.
