IND Rejects

How do I correct IRS Reject IND-901, IND-902, IND-904, IND-931, IND-932, IND-934, IND-941, IND-942, IND-943, or IND-944?

There are several IRS rejects that indicate that the Social Security Administration has locked a social security number, either by request or because the individual is deceased.

  • If it was locked by request, the taxpayer or their representative will need to contact the Social Security Administration at 1 (800) 772-1213 and request for it to be unlocked. Once unlocked, the return can be e-filed again.
  • If the taxpayer is deceased, and the SSA has locked the SSN, the return will be rejected (see chart below). The surviving spouse or representative can contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 to confirm and get more detailed information. Generally, a return that includes a deceased taxpayer with a locked SSN will need to be paper-filed.
