EF message 5758 is generating in this 1040 return. How can this message be resolved? When is the 8862 needed?
EF message 5758 reads:
INCOMPLETE DATA ENTRY: This return contains EIC, CTC, or AOTC and on line 7a of screen 8867 the question pertaining to completing the required recertification forms was answered "Yes." Form 8862, Information to Claim Certain Refundable Credits After Disallowance, must be filed with the return.
Return to data entry and either remove the "Yes" answer from question 7a of screen 8867 - - if form 8862 is not required - - or complete screen 8862.
This message occurs when question 7a on screen 8867 is answered 'Yes,' but no 8862 form has been entered into the return.

To resolve the message:
- If form 8862 is unnecessary, uncheck the 'Yes" box on line 7a, and leave the question blank,
- Or, if form 8862 is required, open screen 8862 (by either following the blue link on line 7 in Drake20, following the link at the bottom of screen EIC in Drake21, or by directly opening it from the Other Forms tab), and complete the necessary information.
In Drake15 and prior, message 5758 reads slightly different:
This return contains EIC, and on screen 8867 the question pertaining to the disallowance of EIC in a prior year for a reason other than a math or clerical error has been answered "Yes," indicating that Form 8862, Information to Claim Earned Income Credit After Disallowance, is required to be filed with the return.
Screen 8862 has not been completed. Return to data entry and either remove the "Yes" answer to the 8862 question, if Form 8862 is not required to be filed, or complete screen 8862.
This message occurs when 'Yes' is marked in the Form 8862 section of the 8867 screen, but no form 8862 has been generated within the return.

In order to resolve this message:
- If form 8862 is unnecessary, return to screen 8867 and uncheck the 'Yes' box in the Form 8862 section,
- Or, if form 8862 is required, open screen 8862 (by either following the blue link on screen 8867, or by directly opening it from the Other Forms tab), and complete the necessary information.
The taxpayer may be required to include form 8862 Information to Claim Earned Income Credit after Disallowance to the next tax return in order to qualify for EIC if the IRS denied or reduced the taxpayer's EIC claim for any other reason than a math or clerical error.
