Referral

Note  The new participant sign-up period for the tax year 2025 referral program ends on January 31, 2026.

With the 1040.com referral program, you can provide your custom link to those individuals who wish to prepare their own taxes using 1040.com. As a referrer, you will receive a percentage of the tax preparation fee from each paid return referred from your account based on your level. Drake has a designated EFIN under which these returns are filed, so Drake is considered to be the ERO and the returns are considered self-prepared. This means that there is no liability or risk for you.

This program is only available to active Drake customers who have purchased a Drake Tax preparation software product for the current filing season. Drake currently offers two different types of referrers: Referrer and Affiliate.

Referrer

  • 20% revenue sharing

  • Available to preparers who purchase the current year PPR version of Drake Tax.

Affiliate

  • 80% revenue sharing

  • Available to preparers who purchase the current year Unlimited version of Drake Tax Pro or Drake Tax 1040.

The referral fee is calculated as a percentage of the tax preparation fee paid by the taxpayer and does not include any other fees paid by the taxpayer for other products or services offered.

New for Tax Year 2025: To qualify for a referral fee payment, you must have a minimum of five returns successfully filed and paid through your referral link during the applicable filing year. If you have four or fewer returns filed and paid by the April 15 deadline, you do not qualify to receive the first payment. If you reach at least five returns by the October 15 deadline, you are eligible to receive payment for each of the returns filed during the season.

  • Example 1: You have ten returns filed and paid through your referral link by April 15, 2026. You will receive payment in the first round of payments in May for the ten returns. You have two returns filed and paid between April 16, 2026, and October 15, 2026. You will receive a referral fee payment for two returns in the second round of payments in November.

  • Example 2: You have three returns filed and paid through your referral link by April 15, 2026. You will not receive payment in the first round of payments in May. You have two returns filed and paid between April 16, 2026, and October 15, 2026. You will receive a referral fee payment for all 5 returns in the second round of payments in November.

Taxpayer Cost

Prices are established by Drake Software, are subject to change, and cannot be modified by the preparer. See https://www.1040.com/pricing for details.

To access your link, log into the Drake Software Support website and go to Account > DIY Referrals. You can provide this link to customers by posting it on your company's website, through emails, using social media, etc. You can display your link on as many websites or social media accounts as needed.

If you are not familiar with your web page coding, you should ask whoever manages it to place the link for you.

Important  Drake Software cannot place the code for you.

If you only want to use the URL for referrals, copy the text that shows in the referrl link window that looks like https://www.1040.com/?did=###### (Where ##### is your Drake Software account number).

Caution  For a button graphic or text link, take care to copy all of the code. Note that there is a scroll bar on each box containing code. Use the scroll bar to make sure your copy includes any code not visible in the box. Failure to copy the entirety of the code can result in lost revenue.

More information is available on the Drake Software Support website under Account > DIY Referrals.

States and Forms Supported

Drake Software's 1040.com Online Filing enables taxpayers to prepare their own 1040 series returns. OLF supports:

  • All 1040 forms that are appropriate for a self-prepared return.

  • 1040 filing for all states that Drake Software supports.

    • If you can file a state income tax return from your installed copy of Drake Software, an individual taxpayer can file a self-prepared 1040 income tax return to that state.

    • The nine states without a state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Texas, Tennessee, Washington and Wyoming.

Generally, 1040.com returns can be e-filed or paper filed. Not all forms available for 1040.com returns can be e-filed. The taxpayer is notified and can paper-file the return if it contains a form that cannot be e-filed. The fee for using 1040.com is for the means of preparing the return, not for the ability to e-file it.
