Data Entry

The withholding amounts for California disability insurance indicated by the codes below should be entered on Form W-2 - Wage and Tax Statement in box 19, and the codes should be selected from the box 20 drop-list.

If the code is not listed in the drop-list, click My entry is not in this list and manually enter it as follows:

Code Meaning
CASDI California State Disability Insurance
SDI California State Disability Insurance
VPDI California Voluntary Plan Disability Insurance
VD California Voluntary Plan Disability Insurance
VI California Voluntary Plan Disability Insurance
VP California Voluntary Plan Disability Insurance

Amounts entered on screen W2 with these codes flow to line 14 of the CAW2CG.

Excess SDI

In addition, for each of these selections, if there is excess disability withholding, the CA individual program will calculate the amount automatically. To qualify as "Excess SDI" all of the following criteria must be met:

  • The amount withheld must have come from two or more employers for that specific taxpayer,

  • The total wages for that taxpayer must be greater than the threshold.

  • The amounts of SDI withheld appears on Forms W-2.

Note  If one of the employers withheld SDI from wages at more than 1.00% of the gross wages, the taxpayer may not claim excess SDI (or VPDI) on Form 540 or Form 540-NR. The taxpayer must contact the employer for a refund.

See Form CAWK_SDI for the specific calculation. If you are not satisfied with the CA calculation, then you can override it by going to States > California > 540/540NR Main Form and entering the Total SDI/VPDI withheld on line 74|84 for either Taxpayer or Spouse.

Caution  Using the override may cause problems with CA e-filing.

By default, the SDI Worksheet, CAWK_SDI, will print anytime there is excess SDI present on the return.
