Full-Year State Residency

To indicate the full-year (single) resident state for a taxpayer, follow these steps: 

  1. Click the Taxpayer Information tab on the left.

  2. Click the drop-list beside Resident State and choose the applicable full-year resident state from the list. .

  3. If they have income from other states, you can select that state on the applicable income screens to generate non-resident returns for other states.

Multi-State/Part-Year Residency

If the taxpayer lived in multiple states during the year, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Taxpayer Information tab on the left.

  2. Click the drop-list beside Resident State and choose I lived in multiple states.

  3. Click the States tab on the left.

  4. Expand the first state drop-down and locate the general information screen. The screen name will vary depending on the state.

  5. Complete any required part-year residency information, such as dates of residency for this state.

  6. Repeat this process for each state that the taxpayer lived in during the year.

Important  Even if all state part-year forms or screens are filled out, the states do not begin to produce part-year information until you have made the selection on the federal Taxpayer Information tab.

When you have selected that an individual lived in multiple states, you may need to select a state in the State drop-list on some federal screens/forms. If you have not made a required state selection, you will see a Federal Error on the File tab that says:

Error REQUIRED Revisit this form

Please complete all required fields before e-filing

Multiple Part-Year States, One Nonresident

Generally, state returns follow the part year residency status entered on the Taxpayer Information tab. Some state data entry screens provide an override that allows the taxpayer to be defined as a nonresident of that state in cases where I lived in multiple states is entered as the Resident State on the Taxpayer Information tab.

No State Returns Needed

To indicate that there are no state returns needed for a taxpayer, follow these steps: 

  1. Click the Taxpayer Information tab on the left.

  2. Click the drop-list beside Resident State and choose Do not prepare states. .

  3. This will prevent all state returns from being generated.

If an override is not available, you will have to complete and either print or e-file the part-year states. You can then generate a nonresident status for the state in question by entering another state on the Taxpayer Information tab as Resident State.
