If a taxpayer tried to cash a TPG refund but the check was refused, it does not mean that there is something wrong with the check. This is not uncommon when cashing TPG checks at Walmart or other locations.
Check was not Verified with TPG
Simply ask the taxpayer to take the check to some other location to cash.
Check was Verified with TPG
If the taxpayer’s check was verified with TPG, this means that TPG considers the check as cashed and cleared so the taxpayer will be unable to take the check to another location and have it cashed. The ERO cannot reprint the check and give it to the taxpayer.
The ERO will need to complete the TPG Check Reissue Form and fax it, and supporting documents, to TPG in order for the ERO to receive a new check to print. The preceding link opens the form, which is also available on TPG’s website. Please note that the form says it may take 24 to 72 hours to process the request once all documents are received.
How the taxpayer will know if the check has been verified with TPG
Normally, the taxpayer will see the check cashing location make a call or look it up on the computer. Most taxpayers call the bank when there’s a problem with cashing the check.
When a check has been verified, TPG returns an acknowledgement that the check has cleared, even if it was not actually cashed.
