Produce the extension letter

The letter generated in view is determined by what selections you have made in the return. If you only see the extension letter in view, and not a result letter for the return, follow the steps below. If there is no letter (extension or regular), go to Setup > Options > Client Communications and verify that a letter template has been chosen in the drop list for each return type. Then in Setup > Communications Editor, review that template.

Extension Letter Needed

If you need to print the extension letter after the return was already e-filed and accepted, you can restore the Selected for EF archive in view mode and print the letter that shows in view. See Drake Tax – Archiving Overview for more information.

Note  Be sure to archive the current version of the return before restoring the 4868 archive.

Paper-filed Extension

If you have paper filed an individual extension, there will not be an acknowledgment that the software can process. In this instance, you may see an Extension Letter instead of a Result letter, or your result letter may continue to refer to an April due date rather than October. To correct this,

  1. Go to the 4868 screen.

  2. Select X from the 4868 drop list at the top of the screen.

  3. Check the box Extension was previously filed; ready to file tax return.

These steps tell the software that you have completed the extension process and now are preparing a regular return. The software will still generate Form 4868, which you can delete after you have printed the letter.

State Returns

A similar problem can occur for state result letters. In some cases, the state extension data entry screen provides an option you can select to indicate the state extension has been sent and you are ready to file a regular state return.
