Tax Law Changes

  • Economic Development: Municipalities can now defer taxes on properties used for economic development, and they can fully exempt property taxes for such purposes, which is expected to help address housing supply issues.

  • Local Tax Exemptions — Senate Bill 179 prohibits local governments from imposing transfer taxes on the sale of houses and other real property. This aims to make homeownership more affordable, especially for young families, first-time homebuyers, and seniors.

  • Property Tax Appeals Process — Improvements have been made to the property tax appeals process, including requiring qualified assessors and providing clearer standards and protections for taxpayers.

  • Property Tax Breaks for Farmers — The same bill also improves property tax breaks for farmers, including farm-related structures, and updates qualification criteria to support local agriculture.
