Tax Law Changes

  • Capital Loss Deduction — The allowed maximum capital loss has been increased from $500 à $3,000 for all filing statuses ($1,500 maximum for Married Filing Separately taxpayers).

  • College Savings Account — The subtraction for contributions to Wisconsin 529 plans has been increased to $3,860 for all filing statuses ($1,930 for Married Filing Separately taxpayers).

  • Earned Income Credit — Wisconsin has adopted the federal law for the Earned Income Credit (EIC) investment income limit of $11,000 and the exceptions for Married Filing Separately taxpayers.

  • Tax Rates Reduced — The tax rates for the first two income brackets have been decreased to 3.9% and 4.4%, respectively.

  • Tuition Fees Expense — The maximum subtraction for tuition fees expense has been decreased to $6,974 per student.
