Many states allow a state return to be transmitted when e-filing a 1040-NR, however, there are some states for which e-filing is disallowed when the federal return is a 1040-NR. An EF message is produced that indicates that state e-file is disallowed. Paper-filing of the state return will be required. The state EF message number differs based on the state being filed.
