The 1099-R screen is used to enter a Form 1099-R that was received by the taxpayer and/or spouse. While you will enter the 1099-R as it was issued on the screen, some additional options are available if you need to indicate that the 1099-R should be carried to another form, prevent it from being used in the current year, or indicate that it should not be updated to the next year. The following options are shown at the bottom left of the 1099-R screen as check boxes.

  • 1099-R for disability?

    • Check this box if the 1099-R is disability income.

  • If so, reported as wages on the 1040?

    • Check this box if the 1099-R is disability income and it should be reported as wages. A SCH screen with code 011 must also be completed if this option is checked.

  • Carry this entry to Form 5329 and compute 10% penalty or exception.

  • Exclude here; distribution is reported on: Form 4972.

    • Mark this box to indicate that this distribution is being reported on Form 4972, Tax on Lump-Sum Distributions. Marking the box does NOT force the distribution to flow to Form 4972, rather it makes sure that the distribution is not reported as income on Form 1040. The amounts must be entered and the questions answered as appropriate for the distribution on the 4972 screen.

  • Exclude here; distribution is reported on: Form 8606, ROTH, 8915D, 8915E

    • Select this box to indicate that this distribution is being reported on the 8606, ROTH, 8915-D, and/or 8915-E screen(s). Marking this box does NOT force the distribution information to flow to the other screen(s), rather it is used to assure that this distribution is not reported as income on Form 1040. The amounts must be entered and the questions answered as appropriate for this distribution on the applicable screen(s).

  • Was this 1099-R altered or handwritten?

    • Check if applicable.

  • Do not update screen to 20YY.

    • This prevents the screen from being update to the next year.

  • No distribution received (ignore screen).

    • Mark this box if the client did not receive a Form 1099-R for this year because there wasn't a distribution but you want to keep the screen for future use. If you mark this box, the program ignores all data entered on this screen when calculating the return.
