Drake Tax 2024

Qualified Disaster Retirement Plan Distributions and Repayments, 8915-series forms, are available in Drake Tax. Form eligibility and data entry varies depending on the year of Drake Tax being used. In Drake Tax 2024, the following forms are available in data entry:

  • Use Form 8915-D for distributions and repayments that were taken for disasters that occurred in 2019 (only applies to Puerto Rico Earthquake disaster repayments).

  • Use Form 8915-F for distributions and repayments that were taken for disasters that occurred after 2019.

Screens for these forms can be accessed in the Drake Tax program by clicking the following screen links from the Adjustments tab of the Data Entry Menu:

  • 915D

  • 915F

  • 915X

Disaster Distributions

Taxpayers can take up to $22,000 in distributions from retirement accounts for each qualifying disaster that occurred in 2024. A separate Form 8915-F should be completed for each spouse (if MFJ) as limitations are determined separately for each taxpayer. To report a disaster distribution, complete screen 915F, Part I and Parts II, III or IV, as applicable.

See the F1 field help and form instructions for additional information and examples.

2021-2024 Disaster Repayments

For disaster distributions taken for disasters in tax years 2021 - 2024 that may be repaid in 2024:

  1. Do not enter the prior-year distribution on screens 1099, 5329, 8606,or ROTH. Only current-year distributions should be entered on these screens, not repayments.

  2. Complete the 915F screen:

    • TS box - Select T or S.

    • In the ST drop list, choose the relevant state.

    • For the calendar year in which the disaster occurred, select 20YY.

    • Complete the disaster type selection by selecting the FEMA code type (DR - Disaster or EM - Emergency) and enter the last four digits of the applicable FEMA code and the state identifier.

    • Do not enter any amounts on Parts I, II, III, and IV.

  3. Complete the 915X screen with the prior year 8915-F information and repayment amounts, as applicable. This screen will also produce the 8915-F worksheets used for lines 12, 14, 23, and 25 of the form.

  4. Calculate and review the return for accuracy, then click the Attach PDF button to automatically attach the Form 8915-F worksheets to the e-filed return. Recalculate the return to clear EF Message 2091.

Repayments after Filing

There may be instances where the distribution is partially or fully repaid after a return that includes Form 8915-F has been filed. See the Form 8915-F Instructions for details on when filing an amended return may be needed. Taxpayers have three years from the date of the original distribution to make a repayment. When an amended return is filed, and that return is updated to the next year, double-check the carryover amounts that are brought forward.
