How to clear New York EF Message 0503

NY may reject the return with Code R-0503 if the NY City or Yonkers withholding is greater than $500 and is equal to the NYS withholdings.

Check the W-2(s), specifically boxes 17 and 19, and correct any data entry errors.

• If the amounts shown in W-2 boxes 17 and 19 are correct, go to NY screen NYEF and mark the check box labeled W-2 data entry has been verified and is correct. This will clear EF Message 0503 and allow the return to be e-filed.

• If the return is e-filed and then rejected with this error, call the New York State Department of Tax and Finance e-file help desk at (518) 457-6387 or (800) 353-1096.

  • If NY issues a W-2 verification code, enter the code on NY screen NYEF in the field labeled NY DTF Issued W-2 Verification Code (See Help). Then recalculate and re-transmit the return.

  • If NY does not issue a W-2 verification code, the return must be paper filed.
